Key Ingredients

I am highlighting just the ones thatneed further explanation. The complete list is in the recipe card below.

  • Rice – Long grain rice won’t be as sticky, but you can use it if that’s your preference.
  • Beef – Choose lean cuts like flank steak or sirloin, and slice thinly against the grain for tender, easy-to-chew bites. I like to use shabu shabu meat from Costco
  • Broccoli – I don’t recommend using frozen broccoli as it will get too mushy upon cooking.
  • Beef Broth: Use low-sodium broth. It will add extra flavor to the rice as it cooks. I also like to use bone broth too!
  • Soy Sauce: Use low-sodium to control salt levels. It provides the main seasoning and balances the savory flavors.

Substitutions

  • Swap out beef with chicken or tofu for a vegetarian twist.
  • Vegetables: feel free to add whatever vegetables you have on handcauliflower, green beans, snow peas, frozen mixed vegetables, carrots…they will all work.
  • Tamari or Coconut Aminos: Use tamari for a gluten-free option or coconut aminos for a soy-free alternative.
  • Hoisin Sauce: Adds a sweeter, richer flavor. It can replace or complement oyster sauce.

How to Make Rice Cooker Beef and Broccoli

Beef marinated in a glass bowl.

Step 1: Marinate the beef
In a bowl, combine the beef with the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Toss well and let it marinate for about 10–15 minutes while you prepare the rice.

Step 2: Prepare the rice
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. Add the rice and beef broth to the rice cooker and give it a quick stir.

Step 3: Add the beef
Spread the marinated beef in a single layer directly on top of the rice. Do not stir it in. Close the lid and cook using the regular rice setting.

Step 4: Add the broccoli
Once the rice cooker finishes cooking, quickly open the lid and scatter the broccoli florets on top. Close the lid again and let it sit for 5 minutes so the residual heat and steam cook the broccoli. Gently fluff the rice and mix everything together before serving.

Expert Tips

  • Cooking times can vary between rice cookers, so it’s best to use the ‘white rice’ or ‘normal’ setting for best results.
  • Work quickly when adding the broccoli. Open the lid briefly, add the broccoli, and close it again so you don’t lose too much steam.
  • Spread the beef in a single layer. This helps it cook evenly as the rice steams.

Best Rice Cooker to Use

  • Tayama Rice Cooker with Steam Tray 8 Cups, White (RC-8R): This model includes a steam tray and has a simple cook setting, making it a convenient and straightforward choice for making this meal without the need for fancy or complicated features.
  • Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker: Known for its advanced “fuzzy logic” technology, which adjusts cooking times and temperatures for perfect rice every time. The “white rice” setting is ideal for this recipe.
  • Cuckoo CR-0631F Rice Cooker: A great choice for Korean-style rice cookers, it has multiple settings and is particularly good for cooking both short-grain and medium-grain rice, which works well for this dish.
  • Aroma Housewares Digital Rice Cooker: An affordable option with a built-in steamer function, it’s versatile for families who want to cook rice, meats, and vegetables simultaneously.

  1. 5 stars
So easy! Meal prepped for 5 more meals from the package of shabu-shabu beef picked up at Costco. We don’t eat a lot of beef, but the ease of this, means it will make it into the rotation. I filled the available space with broccoli, left it until we were ready to eat (maybe 40 min after it was done) and broccoli texture was perfect. Spouse and I added some kimchi and gochugaru to ours at the table. 14 month old loved the rice, she’s still not so sure about meat. I was nervous doing this in our Cuckcoo rice cooker as the cooker and I speak different languages, so beyond selecting type of rice, its always a surprise as whether or not our rice will turn out. This couldn’t have turned out any better, looking forward to making it again!

    1. Yay!! Comments like this are everything to me. So glad it worked for your whole family and that it’s sticking around in the rotation that truly means the world!
