This chocolate avocado pudding comes together with just 5 ingredients in 5 minutes for a silky, chocolatey treat with no added sugar. Your kids will think it’s a special treat, but you’ll know it’s packed with goodness.

Why This Recipe Works
I, as a pediatric dietitian mom, always finding ways to add a little more nutrition to foods kids already love, and this one is a clear winner. It’s packed with heart-healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, making it a dessert that fuels their bodies (and yours!).
And if chocolate avocado pudding sounds strange, you’re not alone. I was skeptical too! But after experimenting, I discovered that avocado IS the secret ingredient that makes this pudding unbelievably creamy and satisfying. The dates bring natural sweetness, so there’s no added sugar, just a perfectly balanced chocolate flavor that feels indulgent without being heavy.
Here’s what others are saying:
“This is EXCELLENT. I was a bit sceptical so made a very small batch for myself while the house was empty… and then it was SO GOOD that I made a huge batch the next day, which everyone loved. Thanks Min! Amazing that this is so good without chocolate or sugar!”
“Made this today and it was soooo delicious! The whole family loved it and my husband couldn’t believe there were avacados in it. Thanks for the recipe!”

Ingredients

- Ripe avocados – Make sure your avocado is ripe! It should yield slightly when you press it gently. If it’s too firm, it won’t blend as smoothly, and if it’s too soft, it might be overripe and have a less pleasant texture.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder – Unlike these chocolate zucchini muffins, you can use either natural or dutch-processed cocoa powder.
- Dates – Medjool dates work the best. They are larger, more moist, and sweeter than the other varieties. But any will work.
- Plain yogurt – you can use regular or Greek yogurt, which will result in a thicker pudding. I also recommend whole milk yogurt as it adds to the rich texture and because extra fat is great for optimal brain development in little ones.
- Pure vanilla extract – will add depth of flavor.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Soak dates in warm water for at least 30 minutes as it will result in a smoother consistency.

Step 2: Add all the ingredients into a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. Taste and add more cocoa powder or dates (or other sweeteners like maple syrup or honey) as desired. Enjoycold!

Expert Tips
- The first time you make this, soak an extra date and add after blending if you desire a sweeter pudding.
- Depending on the cocoa powder used, as some tend to taste more bitter than others, you may need to add additional sweeteners, like more dates, honey, or maple syrup. You can even add some mashed sweet potatoes!
- If you desire a thinner pudding, add a splash of milk.
Serving Suggestions

You can enjoy as is or add any of these fun toppings:
- Fresh raspberries – or other berries or favorite fruits
- Nuts or seeds – like walnuts, pecans, etc. Be sure to finely ground or chop depending on your child’s age
- Unsweetened coconut flakes
- A drizzle of peanut butter (or other nut or seed butter)
- Chocolate chips
- Finely grated carrots – this might sound super strange but if you are struggling to get your child to eat their veggies, give this a try! My toddler never seems to mind this addition and they actually blend in pretty well.

Frequently Asked Questions
Feel free to use any of your favorite plain non-dairy yogurt alternative. Coconut cream would be delicious too!
You can use natural or Dutch-processed cocoa powder. I like the Hershey’s brand. If you use the dark cocoa powder, you will end up with an even richer and dark chocolate pudding flavor.

Hi if I have pitted dates already do i need to soak it in warm water?
Hi! If they are soft there’s no need. You want them to be soft so they’ll blend easily.
Can the dates be left out or substituted?
You can add maple syrup
Absolutely amazing a must try recipe for the whole family
Yay!! So easy and delish right?
Absolutely delicious! I added a tbsp or two of maple syrup extra too.
So good right?! Thanks for the feedback!
Made this today for a fun treat! I added a little honey and it was the perfect dessert for my toddler!! Thanks for the fun idea!
Made this today and it was soooo delicious! The whole family loved it and my husband couldn’t believe there were avacados in it. Thanks for the recipe!
Woohoo!! Right? That’s what my husband said too 🙂
This was delicious! I added more maple syrup than the recipe calls for because we just preferred it that way. Will be making this again.
Yay!!
Thank you for this recipe! I made it today and enjoyed it – loved the creamy texture and that my kids and I were eating chocolate pudding with fiber! I will add another date or honey/maple syrup as suggested in the recipe notes; my pudding still had a little bit of a bitter edge to it from the cocoa. I could also still taste the avocado a little bit (my avocadoes might have been bigger than “small” 🙂 ). Do you think I could add a bit more yogurt next time? Thanks again for your recipes!
You could but the pudding will become tangier (unless you like that!). I suggest adding more dates or even mashed sweet potatoes!
What is the recommended age for this?
After 2!
Looks so good and healthy! Definitely will try for my chocolate loving boys 😉 thank you
Yay!! Hope you guys love this as much as we do!
