Ingredients

Here are the ingredients for the basic smoothie base.
- Plain Greek yogurt – The key ingredient! You can use non-dairy Greek-style yogurt, if needed. You can also use flavored yogurt, but be aware of the high added sugar content. If you have any frozen yogurt, this will be a great way to use it up.
- Milk – can use either dairy or non-dairy milk, like almond milk or coconut milk. Here are the best milk for toddlers.
- Banana – be sure to use frozen banana. Here’s how to freeze ripe bananas so you always have some on hand.
- Hemp seeds – this is optional but will be an easy way to boost nutrition (a great source of healthy fats, protein, and fiber) and add calories to your child’s drink, if needed. You can also use chia seeds or flax seeds.

Variations

Here I’ve shared the basic formula for making any Greek yogurt smoothie. And if you’d like to invite more fun and variety, here are some suggestions!
Along with creamy yogurt, milk, banana, and hemp seeds, add:
- Spinach yogurt smoothie: a handful of baby spinach
- Strawberry Greek Yogurt Smoothie: ½ cup of frozen strawberries (or more for a vibrant pink color). Adjust the milk as needed, adding up to 1 cup for a thinner consistency. For an extra strawberry boost, you can also use strawberry yogurt.
- Chocolate yogurt smoothie: 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- Peanut butter banana smoothie: 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter for a rich, nutty flavor. If there’s a nut allergy, swap it with almond butter, this homemade sunflower seed butter, or any nut-free alternative.
- Vanilla yogurt smoothie: use vanilla yogurt + a splash of vanilla extract if you want the flavor to be even more pronounced.
- Oatmeal Smoothie: ¼ to ½ cup of rolled oats for extra fiber and a boost of whole grains. It will make the smoothie heartier and even more satisfying. For a smoother texture, blend the oats with the milk first before adding the other ingredients.

Recipe Tips
- While you can use fresh banana, I highly recommend using frozen banana for a thicker and creamier smoothie. It will also make your drink nice and cold!
- If you prefer a thinner smoothie, add more milk until desired consistency is reached.
- Enhance the taste with a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or a splash of vanilla extract.
- The banana provides natural sweetness, but if you’d like a little extra, you can adjust by adding honey, maple syrup, or date syrup to taste.

Frequently Asked Questions
Plain whole milk Greek yogurt is best for optimal flavor, thickness, and nutrition. Fat is a super important nutrient for babies and toddlers, especially, as it is essential in supporting their rapid brain development.
You can use flavored yogurt, but most options contain high amounts of added sugars. A better alternative is this homemade vanilla yogurt or strawberry yogurt (so easy!).
It’s best to enjoy immediately but you can refrigerate and enjoy within 1 day.
If you’d like to make extra while you are dirtying a blender, you can freeze in popsicle molds or ice cube tray. When ready to enjoy, add 5-6 frozen cubes into the blender with some milk or yogurt and blend it up!

This recipe made me SO happy. It’s just delicious. I am always well stocked in both frozen bananas and plain greek yogurt but had never put them together in a smoothie for my toddler! Really love the result, as did my little boy who loves anything banana. It does have the perfect amount of sweetness – nothing over the topic but still very satisfying. I’ll be looking now to add smoothies to my toddler’s snack rotation 🙂 Will be trying the other variations too!
Your comment makes me SO happy :). Hope you enjoy the other variations as well!
