Banana popsicles two ways - strawberry yogurt and chocolate walnut.

Bananas and your favorite chocolate, yogurt, and toppings are all you need to make these homemade banana popsicles! They are healthy, easy, and so fun to eat for babies, kids, and adults alike.

Reasons to love these Banana Popsicles

Minimal effort to produce maximum satisfaction that you and your kids are going to go crazy over. That is what I promise with these banana popsicles or bananas on a stick!

There are SO many reasons why you should make these today.

    • Made with simple ingredients - I have a feeling you have most if not all of them on hand right now!
    • No need for special equipments
    • A healthy treat that can be made without any added sugar depending on the toppings you choose
    • A fun activity to do with your child.
    • Perfect for birthday parties or any celebration - You can set up a bar with all the toppings (you can even match with the party theme) and let the kids or guests make their own. Fun and delicious!

    Ingredients

    • Fresh bananas - you want to use ripe bananas with some brown spots for natural sweetness. However, you don't want to use overripe bananas as they won't hold their shape well. Avoid using green bananas.
    • For coating - Here I'm using melted chocolate and Greek yogurt
    • Toppings - this is optional but there are SO many options to elevate your banana popsicles.

    Variations

Coating and topping options for banana popsicles.

    Coat the bananas in

    • Melted chocolate - I like to use chocolate chips but feel free to use whatever you have on hand. Milk chocolate, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate, they will all work!
    • Yogurt - I prefer the thickness and creaminess of full fat Greek yogurt. It also stays better on the bananas. But you can use regular yogurt or dairy-free yogurt alternative. You can also use flavored yogurt, such as this homemade peanut butter yogurt, vanilla yogurt, strawberry yogurt, blueberry yogurt, or mango yogurt. All SO easy to make with no added sugar!
    • Peanut butter - you can also use nut butter, like almond butter, or seed butter.

Note: You can also do 2 layers. For example, Coat the peanut butter first, freeze until set, then coat in melted chocolate.

    All the toppings

    • Nuts - walnuts, almonds, cashews, pecans...all are welcomed! You can roughly chop, finely chop or grind depending on your child's age.
    • Seeds - Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, or flax seeds are all great!
    • Freeze-dried fruit - I like to place in a plastic bag and crush using a rolling pin or the back of a measuring cup. You can also use a food processor or blender.
    • Granola - Crush any big chunks. You can use store-bought or try this no added sugar granola recipe!
    • Cereal - like rice crispies or any of your favorite cereal. Chop any large pieces.
    • Baby cereals or puffs
    • Coconut flakes
    • Sprinkles

    Step-by-Step Instructions

4 Banana halves with popsicle sticks.
    1. Cut the bananas in half. Insert popsicle sticks into the flat bottom of each banana. Be sure you leave enough for your “handle."
    2. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for at least 3 hours.
    3. Right before you take the bananas out of the freezer, prepare your coating and topping(s).

    For chocolate banana popsicle version

Banana dipped in chocolate on the left and rolled in ground walnuts on the right.
    1. In a wide-mouth half pint mason jar or tall glass, add 8 ounces of chocolate chips and 2 teaspoons of coconut oil (optional but it will give you a smoother texture and help harden the chocolate when it comes in contact with the frozen banana).
    2. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until melted and smooth. Alternatively, you can use the double boiler method.
    3. Dip the bananas one at a time into the melted chocolate.
    4. Immediately roll or sprinkle with nuts or topping(s) of choice.
    5. Place back on the baking sheet and pop into the freezer for at least 10 minutes, until completely set.

    For yogurt banana popsicle version

Banana covered in yogurt on the left and rolled in crushed freeze-dried strawberries on the right.
    1. Add 1 cup of yogurt into a wide bowl.
    2. Using a spoon, cover each banana in yogurt. It will be a bit tricky but don't go for perfection! As long as the bananas are covered all around, it's all good!
    3. Sprinkle with your topping(s) of choice. I really love using crushed freeze-dried strawberries.
    4. Place back on the baking sheet and pop into the freezer for at least 30 minutes, until completely set.

    Top Tips for Success

    • Be careful not to overheat the chocolate, as it can burn easily and become lumpy.
    • Have your coating and topping(s) ready to go before taking the bananas out of the freezer.
    • Add your toppings immediately, especially if using melted chocolate as they will firm up super fast on a frozen banana. Otherwise, your toppings will not stick.
    • Remove from the freezer about 5 minutes or so prior to eating to help soften up the banana a bit.

    Storage

A toddler holding the yogurt covered banana pops rolled in freeze-dried strawberries.

I like to make a large batch of this banana treat and keep in the freezer for whenever we have a craving for something sweet, especially on hot summer days.

Simply transfer to a freezer bag or airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. However, for best taste and texture, I recommend eating them within the first month of freezing.

Let the popsicle sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften slightly.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are these banana popsicles suitable for babies and toddlers?

Yes, as long as the ingredients you choose do not have any added sugars. I would use yogurt or peanut butter (or nut or seed butter if there is an allergy) for the coating.

If using nuts as a topping, be sure to finely ground. For babies, I recommend slicing the halved banana into 3 spears and leaving out the popsicle sticks. These banana popsicles are great for teething too.

What age are chocolate banana popsicles suitable for?

I recommend waiting until at least two as chocolate contains both added sugars and caffeine.
