Ingredients

All ingredients laid out on a white countertop.

I am highlighting just the ones that need further explanation. The complete list is in the recipe card below.

  • Pre-cooked rotisserie chicken – you’ll need to remove the chicken from the bones and shred. You can purchase pre-shredded although it is more pricey.
  • Chicken taco seasoning – you can use store-bought or homemade chicken taco seasoning, which is super easy to make and delicious!
  • Tomato sauce- adds moisture and a saucy element to the filling
  • Tortillas – feel free to use flour or corn tortillas or even crispy taco shells.

Substitutions and Variations

  • An alternative to chicken? You can use cooked beef, turkey, or pork
  • Switch up your rotisserie chicken tacos by using lentil wraps or quinoa wraps instead of traditional flour tortillas. These alternatives not only offer a gluten-free option but also bring a nutritious and earthy flavor to your tacos
  • Desire crispy chicken tacos? You can assemble and bake in the oven at 400°F for 10-15 minutes.

Toppings for Shredded Chicken Tacos

And now comes the fun part! Here are some fun and delicious toppings to make your taco experience extra special!

  • Shredded cheese – feel free to use your favorite variety, like cheddar, Monterey Jack, cotija cheese, or Mexican cheese blend
  • Salsa: use store-bought or homemade – dice up tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and add a squeeze of lime
  • Guacamole or diced avocado
  • Fresh Vegetables – such as shredded lettuce, chopped red onion, or bell peppers for a satisfying crunch!
  • Greek Yogurt or Sour Cream – A cool and creamy addition to balance the heat and spices.
  • Chopped Cilantro and Green Onions – sprinkle these herbs for a burst of freshness and a pop of color.
  • Fresh Lime juice
  • Mexican rice
  • Beans – such as black beans, refried beans for added protein and iron

Chicken Tacos for Babies and Toddlers

Sliced tortilla on half of plate, prepped taco fillings grouped individually on other half of a blue plate.

This is the perfect meal to serve family-style!

Making a taco buffet for your little one is a playful way to make meals exciting. It will be like a mini food party that encourages them to try new textures and flavors, all while enjoying the process of creating their own tacos.

If your child is learning to like mixed foods, you can serve deconstructed, while continuing to show them how you enjoy your tacos. They will catch on eventually.

Storage

Transfer any chicken leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate for 3-4 days.

When ready to eat, reheat the chicken separately to maintain its juiciness. Warm the tortillas and assemble the tacos just before serving.

You can also freeze your leftover chicken for up to 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much rotisserie chicken do I need for tacos?

As a general guideline, plan for about 1/4 to 1/3 pound of chicken per taco (less for babies and toddlers, of course). This allows for a generous and satisfying portion. Adjust the quantity based on the number of people you’re serving and any additional fillings or toppings you plan to include.

What’s the best way to warm tortillas?

It depends on your preference and the equipment you have. To microwave, place a stack of tortillas on a microwave-safe plate with a damp paper towel between each tortilla. Microwave on high for 20-30 seconds or until they are warm and flexible.

For stovetop, heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
Warm each tortilla for about 15-30 seconds on each side until it’s pliable and has a slight char. You can also wrap in foil and bake in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.
