Ingredients

All the ingredients laid out on a wooden board.
  • Tortilla – Large, soft flour or whole wheat tortillas work best. You can also use gluten-free wraps or spinach/sun-dried tomato flavored wraps for color.
  • Spread – Acts as a “glue” that holds the pinwheels together. Try cream cheese, hummus, avocado, peanut or nut butter or sunflower seed butter.
  • Filling – Protein, veggies, cheese — the possibilities are endless (see variations below!).

Easy Pinwheel Recipes

Whether you’re making lunchbox pinwheels or a party appetizer, these combos are always a hit:

Veggie & Vegetarian

  • Rainbow veggie pinwheel – spread hummus and add finely chopped or sliced raw or cooked vegetables like bell peppers, cucumber, carrots, zucchini, and spinach. Try this carrot hummus!
  • Greek-inspired pinwheels – mix together cream cheese and tzatziki sauce on tortilla and add sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, and a sprinkle or oregano
  • Vegetable tortilla roll-ups with Thai peanut sauce
  • Caprese – Cream cheese + pesto, fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil

Protein-Packed

  • Avocado chicken pinwheels – spread mashed avocado or guacamole and add sliced cheese, lettuce or baby spinach leaves, and sliced or shredded chicken.
  • Chicken avocado salad roll ups
  • BLT pinwheels – Spread mayonnaise or ranch dressing on the tortilla, then layer with crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, and sliced tomatoes.
  • Salmon pinwheels – mash this salmon bean salad and spread onto tortilla.
  • Mexican pinwheels – mix together cream cheese, taco seasoning (try this no salt taco seasoning), and shredded cheddar cheese. Add cooked ground or shredded beef (can also use chicken or beans) and diced red bell peppers.

Kid-Friendly & Fun

  • Sweet potato chicken roll ups – Spread cream cheese on tortilla followed by mashed sweet potato (or butternut squash). Then add a layer of baby spinach and shredded chicken. For tips on cooking sweet potatoes perfectly for little ones, see my guides on How to Cook Sweet Potatoes for Babies and Butternut Squash for Babies.
  • Pizza roll ups – mix together cream cheese and sugar free pizza sauce and add your favorite pizza toppings like pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, and mozzarella cheese.
  • Easy Banana sushi – can use peanut butter, almond butter, or sunflower seed butter
  • Pesto turkey pinwheel – combine cream cheese and pesto (try this ricotta pesto), spread on tortilla, favorite cheese slices, thinly sliced deli turkey, and spinach

Sweet Treat Pinwheel Sandwich

  • Nutella roll ups – spread nutella then spread some chopped strawberries. You can also add finely chopped nuts. For a baby-friendly version, see my guide on Strawberries for Babies.
  • Peanut Butter & Apple – Nut butter + thin apple slices, sprinkle of cinnamon

Toddler-Friendly Tip: For little ones, slice veggies thinly or finely chop fillings and mix with the spread. Adding tender Instant Pot shredded chicken boosts protein while keeping the texture soft and easy to eat.

Here I’m sharing two variations – full recipes are found below

  1. Spread – Layout your tortilla on a clean surface. Evenly spread a layer of your chose spread onto the tortilla.
  2. Layer Fillings – Place the fillings over the spread in an even layer. Be careful not to overstuff the tortilla to ensure easy rolling.
  3. Roll – Carefully start rolling the tortilla from one end, making sure to roll it as tightly as possible without squeezing out the filling.
  4. Chill (Optional) – Wrap the pinwheel tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. You will achieve cleaner cuts and a neater presentation
  5. Slice & Serve – Slice seam side down with a serrated knife and enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Avoid overloading the tortilla with too many fillings as it can make it challenging to roll the pinwheels tightly and neatly.
  • Slice with a sharp knife, preferably a serrated knife for best results. The serrated edge helps to maintain the pinwheels’ shape and prevent the fillings from spilling out during slicing.
  • Get creative! whatever you have in the refrigerator is fair game :).
  • Involve your child – allowing your child to pick out their own fillings and toppings (tip: provide them with several options but not too many) gives them a sense of ownership and pride, leads to a more adventurous palate, and reduces picky eating tendencies. Plus it’s fun way to create memories in the kitchen.

Serving Suggestions

Two lunchboxes each with pinwheel sandwiches, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Party platter – arrange the sliced pinwheels on a decorative platter or serving tray. Mix sweet and savory pinwheels for variety.
  • Lunchbox – pack individual pinwheel slices in school lunch boxes. Include some vegetables, fruits and crackers for a balanced meal. Check out Ultimate Lunch Box Ideas for Kids for more lunchbox inspiration.
  • Picnics and outdoor events – pack them in a portable container and enjoy as a fuss-free finger food while outdoors.
  • Afternoon snack for toddlers, kids, and adults – Don’t miss these healthy snacks for toddlers.

Storage Suggestions (to prevent sogginess)

  • Wrap individually in plastic wrap, then place in an airtight container.
  • Store in fridge for up to 3 days, but best enjoyed same day.
  • If making ahead, don’t slice until ready to serve for fresher results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of flour works best for pinwheel sandwiches?

Large soft flour tortillas or wraps work best. These are soft, pliable, and easy to roll. The larger size allows you to fit a good amount of filling without the risk of overstuffing. You can use whole wheat flour tortillas but they’re not as neutral in flavor.

For those with dietary restrictions or preferences, there are also gluten-free options available. You can also turn these into sandwich roll-ups by using sandwich bread.

How do I prevent pinwheel sandwiches from unraveling while slicing?

While it’s an extra step, it’s best to chill for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Use a sharp serrated knife as it will give you the most clean and precise cuts without squishing the pinwheel. Use a gentle back-and-forth sawing motion instead of pressing down with force.

Can I make pinwheel sandwiches the night before?

Yes! Just wrap tightly and refrigerate. For best results, slice right before serving.

What’s the best spread for keeping pinwheels together?

Cream cheese works well because it’s thick and holds ingredients in place. Hummus and mashed avocado are also great, but avoid watery spreads.
